FPAA Statement on the police brutality meted out on Mariel Mueller, A DW Journalist in Nairobi, Kenya

The Foreign Press Association, Africa strongly condemns the errant behavior of a Kenyan police officer who deliberately fired a teargas canister that hit and injured our member and colleague Mariel Mueller, this morning, while covering protests in Nairobi.

The said Kenyan policeman shot Mariel twice in the leg with a teargas canister fired by a gun.

“Second time they hit me directly while we were doing an interview for DW,” Mariel said.

Journalists should not become conspicuous targets for assault, arrest or intimidation by police especially when they are clearly identifiable as members of the press. The Foreign Press Association, Africa will not sit back while instances of abuse against our colleagues, grow.
